Are You Scared Yet? A Few Frightening Dental Statistics to Inspire Better Oral Hygiene

Human teeth play crucial roles in the processes of communication and digestion, and excellent oral hygiene is the best way to keep them in great shape for life. Unfortunately, many people do not understand the negative consequences that can come from inadequate oral care, and this can lead to a wide range of painful and preventable problems like toothaches and severe gum disease. Since Halloween isn’t far away, here’s a quick look at a few terrifying statistics that just might scare you into better oral hygiene.

More Than Half of American Adults Have Gum Disease

Much like a poltergeist, gum disease can seem like a negligible issue at first, but it will develop into a destructive problem that can cause permanent damage if you don’t get rid of it quickly. While gingivitis, the first stage of gum disease, can usually be reversed with improved oral hygiene, it will eventually turn into periodontitis if left untreated. Periodontitis leads to serious symptoms like gum recession, jawbone erosion, and tooth loss, and it requires professional treatment to be resolved.

Unfortunately, more than half of all American adults have some form of gum disease. Addressing this issue early can prevent many severe oral health issues as well as the discomfort they cause.

Tooth Loss Is Frighteningly Common

While many people associate tooth loss with older people, the truth is that children and young adults can suffer with this problem as well. Almost 90% of adults between the ages of twenty and sixty-four have had tooth decay, and the rate bumps up to 96% for those between fifty and sixty-four. Around 178 million adults in the U.S. have lost at least one tooth, and 2.2% of adults between the ages of twenty and sixty-four have no remaining natural teeth.

In almost all cases, oral infections like tooth decay and gum disease can be prevented with proper oral hygiene, smart eating habits, and regular dental checkups. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best way to keep your mouth in excellent health.
