Dental Veneers: What Will Your New Smile Feel Like?

If imperfections in your teeth are bothering you, you may turn to a cosmetic treatment to fix them. The benefits of them may be exactly what you want, but you might be worried about how comfortable they are once done. Especially with veneers! They are porcelain shells that sit over your teeth, so people wonder what they feel like.

The good news is that veneers are made with your comfort in mind. If you are worried about how this cosmetic treatment will feel once it is attached to your smile, here is what you can expect.

What Veneers Feel Like During Your Treatment

The entire veneer process is typically done within two visits: the preparation of your teeth and the placement of your permanent veneers.

During this first appointment, your dentist will remove a thin layer of enamel from your natural teeth to make space for the cosmetic. While this may sound intimidating, it shouldn’t hurt since a local anesthetic is used to numb the area beforehand. Some people say they feel a little pressure or mild discomfort, but it’s short-lived.

Your dentist will take dental impressions and send them to a dental lab. They will expertly craft your veneers with your smile in mind so they sit flush. It takes a couple of weeks, and temporary veneers are placed in the meantime. They won’t feel exactly like your final set, but they will give you a sense of what they will look like. The temporary veneers should still be comfortable, but they may feel a tad bulkier.

How Veneers Feel After Placement

When your final set is ready, you’ll be back for the placement of them. Once they are bonded to your teeth, you’ll be ready to show off a new smile! Since veneers are custom-made, they should feel like your natural teeth! The porcelain in the cosmetic is also a smooth material that gives the same impression as enamel, so you may hardly notice a difference!

However, if you have undergone this cosmetic treatment to change the shape of your pearly whites, then you may not be accustomed to their new size. Since a small amount of enamel was removed, they won’t appear or feel bulky, but it could take some time to get used to them. A few people report having trouble enunciating as their tongue wasn’t used to the presence of veneers, but they start to feel natural and seamless within a couple of weeks.

If you experience intense or prolonged discomfort for more than a week, call your dentist immediately. Any sensitivity and swollen or bleeding gums can be a sign of an underlying issue. A visit can help ensure that your oral health is in good condition so you can start showing off that new smile.

Cosmetic dental treatments are designed with your comfort in mind, and veneers are no exception! You can feel confident knowing that they are comfortable and natural feeling. You can always talk to your dentist about your worries, or if you notice any unusual discomfort, they’ll be happy to help.
