Laser Dentistry – Rochester, NY

Advanced Dentistry for Enhanced Comfort

When caring for something as delicate as gum tissue, our doctors want to keep the process as comfortable as possible for patients in need. That’s why we’ve invested in a soft tissue laser that helps us perform gum recontouring and other essential services more effectively than ever before. The focused wavelength is safe, precise, and instantly sterilizing; as a result, the recovery process is greatly accelerated and postoperative symptoms like bleeding and swelling are kept to a minimum.

What are Dental Lasers?

A dental laser isn’t too different from other types of lasers you may be familiar with. A thin, wand-like device emits a highly concentrated beam of light capable of removing targeted (and highly precise) areas of gum tissue. Rest assured, though, the laser is not painful or harmful to the teeth. In fact, it’s considered to be more comfortable and effective than a traditional scalpel. Since the heat produced from the laser instantly cauterizes any tissue it comes into contact with, it also creates a much smoother recovery process.

Types of Laser Dental Treatments

Dental lasers can be used for a wide variety of treatments in dentistry. That said, we use our laser for two main services:

Gum Disease Therapy

In early stages, gum disease can often be reversed with increased oral hygiene efforts. However, in more advanced stages, eliminating the disease may require scaling and root planing (otherwise known as a “deep cleaning”). The goal of scaling and root planing is to remove harmful bacteria from above and below the gumline. Thanks to our soft tissue laser, we can do this without pointy instruments. The laser is precise enough to get rid of infected tissue without jeopardizing healthy tissue.

Gum Recontouring

Gum recontouring can fix oral health issues associated with an overextended gumline, but most of the time it’s done for more cosmetic purposes. A “gummy” smile can detract from the pearly whites that should be center-stage. Instead of reshaping the gumline with a scalpel, our team can remove excess gum tissue with our dental laser. Most patients don’t even need a local anesthetic!

The Benefits of Laser Dentistry

Treating gum disease or reshaping the gumline with a dental laser has several benefits. Here’s why our team loves this advanced technology:

  • Tissue is cauterized instantly, greatly reducing post-op bleeding and soreness while promoting healing
  • Allows for more precise control
  • More comfortable for patients
  • More effective at eliminating gum disease bacteria
